The Samoeng Loop: Chiang Mai's perfect half-day ride

Not everyone has four days for the Mae Hong Son Loop. Everyone has half a day for Samoeng. This 100 km circuit northwest of Chiang Mai packs jungle canyon roads, the Mae Sa valley and mountain viewpoints into three to four unhurried hours, and drops you back in town in time for khao soi.

It is also the perfect shakedown ride: if you are warming up for Pai or the big loop, Samoeng tells you everything about your bike and your curves before you commit.

The route

Classic direction: leave Chiang Mai on the Canal Road heading north, turn onto Route 1096 through the Mae Sa valley, climb to Samoeng via Route 1269, then swing back south past Mon Cham and through Hang Dong on the 4051 and 108. Around 100 km total.

Counterclockwise (the way described) gets the touristy Mae Sa valley out of the way first and saves the best riding, the empty 1269 ridge road, for the middle. Clockwise works fine too and puts the viewpoints in morning light.

Stops along the way

You could ride it non-stop in two hours. Do not. The stops are the point:

  • Mae Sa waterfall, ten levels of falls five minutes off the road
  • Mon Cham (Mon Jam), the ridge-top royal project with strawberry fields and bamboo platforms hanging over the valley
  • The Samoeng viewpoint on the 1269, the classic loop photo
  • Samoeng town for coffee and a bowl of noodles at the halfway mark
  • Wat Phra That Doi Kham on the way home if you still have legs

Bike and practicalities

Any healthy 125cc scooter handles the Samoeng Loop. The climbs are real but short. Fuel up before leaving town and you will not think about petrol again. Police checkpoints occasionally sit on the 1096 in the Mae Sa valley: helmet on, licence and IDP in your pocket, smile, ride on.

Start by 9 am and you are back by 2 pm, before the afternoon heat. In rainy season ride it in the morning: the 1269 gets slick mist after lunch.

Quick answers

How long does the Samoeng Loop take?

Three to four hours with stops, two if you just ride. It fits comfortably in a morning.

Is the Samoeng Loop good for beginner riders?

It is the best beginner mountain ride around Chiang Mai: real curves and climbs, but short, close to town, and with traffic that thins out quickly. Ride the city for a day first, then do Samoeng before attempting Pai.

Samoeng Loop or Doi Suthep, which first?

Doi Suthep is a 30 km out-and-back climb and a temple. Samoeng is a proper little road trip. Do Suthep on day one to learn your brakes, Samoeng on day two to learn the curves.
